Digitally Including: Bulky Bob’s ‘Computers for Kids’

The Covid-19 pandemic has further highlighted the imperative need for digital engagement. Increased working from home, online teaching & staying connected with family and friends are but a few examples of our escalated reliance on the digital over the past 10 months.

The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority asked the VCFSE sector for input on their draft Strategy and Action Plan which was focused on the digital and which includes Digital Inclusion as an integral component.

Covid-19 has also exposed the depths of digital inequality across the country and within the LCR too. For example, children who are receiving online teaching but have to share one computer with their brothers and sisters; people who have lost their job due to the pandemic and are unable to afford digital equipment to connect with loved ones, book GP appointments or order a supermarket delivery.

Speaking to these issues, Bulky Bob’s (a Liverpool-based furniture and white goods recycler) has started an initiative ‘Computers for Kids’ working with organisations (VCFSE/Schools etc) supporting children to provide computers to them, affordably. Often companies who are purchasing the latest IT equipment leave behind great working condition computers etc and thus Bulky Bob’s has ceased this opportunity to address some of the digital inequality issues experienced by children during lockdown.

This programme sold out in the first day of its launch, generating £58,800 of social value in one day. They are appealing to anybody who would like to donate unused IT equipment, in order for them to further provide computers for children in need.
